Cardinal McCloskey's Child Care Center provides accessible, community-based,
Kindergarten Graduation 2002
When I grow up I want to be…
quality child care for 109 children, ages 2 years 9 months to 10 years, providing both pre-school, after-school and summer programs. The Center is located in the ethnically diverse East Tremont -West Farm Square community of the Bronx. Celebration of the program's cultural diversity is emphasized through music, story telling and the observance of multi-cultural events and holidays. Flags from each child's native country are displayed proudly throughout the Center.

Pre-school Program

Our Pre-school Program is designed to prepare 80 children, ages 2 years 9 months - 6 years, for elementary school. Three-year old, four-year old and Kindergarten classes are designed to nurture a child's cognitive, emotional, social, physical and nutritional growth. Experienced, caring, bi-lingual pre-school teachers are committed to helping develop each child's self-awareness and self-esteem. Speech Therapy and other Early Intervention therapies are provided to the children as needed. For children presenting with behavioral difficulties, a Clinical Psychologist is available to provide assessment, evaluations and referrals for additional services within Cardinal McCloskey Services or to other service programs.
Puzzle Time is a favorite time.

Most children attend the program through Kindergarten and then often continue with the After-School Program. The annual Kindergarten graduation is a highlight of the school year and includes all the children singing the Center's alma mater, participating in song and dance performances, a graduation processional and each graduating Kindergartener's announcement of what they want to be when they grow up.

In addition to providing care for the children, great emphasis is placed on integrating and supporting the parents in their child-rearing role and in their child's day care experience. For nearly all the parents participating in the program, day care fees are subsidized. Many are single working mothers or mothers attending training prior to entering the workforce. The Cardinal McCloskey Day Care Center has helped stabilize family life for many parents through the provision of direct and referral services, such as: career counseling, domestic violence counseling, child abuse prevention services, assistance with job and housing searches, Medicaid intervention and school collaboration.

After-School and Summer Program

Our After-School Program provides care for 29 children, ages 6 - 10 years, from 2:00 PM until 6 PM during the school year and from 8 AM until 6 PM during the summer, school vacations and holidays. Children in this program are provided with a safe, nurturing atmosphere designed to encourage them to enjoy diversity, aid in their socialization process and to build their self-awareness and self-esteem. Field trips, homework assistance, structured free time and exposure to a range of opportunities to develop new interests and competencies are key elements to keeping these children interested in academic achievements. The program provides a bridge between their school experiences, the demands of homework and the need for physical exercise and creative expression.
